University of Guelph Pediatric Pain, Health & Communication Lab

Did you know that 2/3 children and 1/4 of adults are afraid of needles?
And that at ~$6 billion per year, chronic pain in Canada costs more than heart disease, HIV, and cancer combined? Chronic pain isn’t just seen in adults: in fact ~20% of adolescents experience chronic pain (e.g., abdominal pain, headaches). The ultimate goal of our research in the Pediatric Pain, Health, and Communication Lab is to improve understanding of the complex interplay of factors that impact pain and health to figure out how best to help. Led by Dr. Meghan McMurtry, we focus on creating the knowledge needed to understand pediatric pain and fear (e.g., how should we measure fear? how should parents behave when their children are in pain to be most helpful?), review and synthesize the information, and engage in knowledge translation so that the findings are used in practice. Come see us to learn more about how to reduce chronic pain and needle worries and how to participate in our current projects!

Wildlife Club

The Wildlife Club is a place for people to come together and share their passion for and love of wildlife! We hold a variety of events throughout the year for students to grow their enthusiasm for nature that they will carry with them for the rest of their personal and professional lives. Come check us and our live specimens out!

Child Emotion and Mental Health Lab

The Child Emotion and Mental Health (CEMH) lab is a research lab in the Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology program at the
University of Guelph directed by Dr. Kristel Thomassin. The CEMH lab is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families. We
are a team of University of Guelph students and volunteers who work together to answer important questions related to children’s emotional development and mental health. Emotions are at the centre of almost everything we do. They guide our behaviour and inform the basis of many of our interactions with others. Strong emotion skills such as the ability
to identify emotions in oneself and in others, to label specific emotions, and to appropriately manage emotional experiences are very important for good mental health. Problems with any of these skills can lead to difficulties with anxiety, depression, and anger. In our research, we seek to understand how unique members of the family can contribute in a positive way to development of strong emotion skills.

Alumni Affairs & Development

Stop by the U of G Alumni Station in the University Centre Courtyard during College Royal, open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. While you’re there, snap a photo at our booth and take home a printed keepsake, pick up exclusive U of G swag, sign up for your Alumni Card, and reconnect with familiar faces - or make a few new connections along the way!
